General Motors is aiming to build 10,000 Chevrolet Volts in 2011 and 60,000 in 2012, according to Vice Chairman Bob Lutz.

The initial full-year production targets for GM's upcoming plug-in hybrid were contained in an e-mail that Lutz sent late last week to the Detroit Free Press. He described the numbers as "notional targets," adding that "the actual number is highly dependent on electrical component supplier capability and battery experience."

The Volt is slated to begin production in late 2010 at GM's Detroit-Hamtramck plant. It will be built on a version of the company's new Delta global compact platform, which will be shared with the 2010 replacement for the Chevrolet Cobalt, among other products.

Lutz told the Free Press that GM still aims to have the Volt on sale by November 2010, with a price target of less than $40,000.
